I see students overcoming challenges and others even inspiring me.</p><h2>Motivated To Learn</h2><p>Alex, a 1st grader at Barrina, had been really struggling in his TechLit classes. He was very shy and with very low esteem. He would just sit and stare at the screen.</p><p>Today, he surprised me. He came to class and started working on his mouse movement all on his own. I wish I could tell you what changed.</p><p>His classments were really impressed with him. They became motivated to learn even more things and improve as much as Alex did. One of them said, in swahili, "<strong>Kama Alex amejua, mbona mini nijsijue vitu zingine.</strong>" <em>(If Alex has improved like this, even I can too.)</em></p><h2>Loving TechLit Classes</h2><p>Alton, a 4th Grader love Tux Math. His classmates know to call upon him when they are stuck. Today, I decided to ask him what he wanted to be when he grows up. I expected to him to say a doctor, a pilot or something. "<strong>Mwalimu wa TechLit</strong> <em>(TechLit Teacher)</em>"<em>,</em> he said.</p>

<h2>Introducing Graphic Design</h2><p>As a specialist educator at TechLit, my job is to introduce students to Graphic Design with Inkscape. During my first intro lesson at Barrina Primary, I gave an example of a school logo on one of the kids' sweaters.</p><h2>Exploration and Creativity</h2><p>So today, one of the students came in with an idea that he was going to make one of their own school. Throughout the whole lesson, he was just serious, concentrating, trying to design a logo. He was also the same student that explored stars today and realized that one can get a triangle from a star.</p><h2>Focus and Determination</h2><p>Since he only concentrated on his design he was mean and did not want to show the others, he found it a waste of time. So I had to myself. At least finally he made something. He left saying "<strong>nikirudi next time bado ntaendelea</strong>" <em>(I'll just have to continue when I return.)</em> He saved his work.</p>

<p>I'm the graphic design specialist at TechLit now, so I'm introducing students to how they can make their own designs with Inkscape. Today, one student was very focused on his own work and didn't want to share. He is very good at completing designs and saving his work.</p>

<p>Barina is a public primary school in Nakuru county, Kenya. TechLit classes in Barina serve over 600 students.</p><h2>Barina's ICT Teacher Nick</h2><blockquote>Nick was teaching computer classes even before TechLit started.</blockquote><p>Barina was the first school to have TechLit classes in Nakuru county, all thanks to their ICT teacher, Nick.</p><p>Nick was already teaching computer classes in Barina Primary School before TechLit started. He downloaded educational videos from youtube to share with his class on a projector. This is quite rare in rural Kenyan schools.</p><blockquote>Nick convinced his school to invited TechLit for a presentation.</blockquote><p>Our CEO Nelly happened to be visiting another school the same day as Nick. After hearing about the program TechLit was offering, Nick rushed back to Barina and convinced the headteacher there that Barina should bring TechLit to their school immediately. The next day, Barina's headteacher invited Nelly to meet the school board, the teachers and Barina students.</p><p>Now with TechLit in the school, Nick always has feature requests for our server, and he actively markets TechLit classes to many other schools in the area.</p><h2>Barina's Favorite Subject: Graphic Design</h2><blockquote>Kids in Barina prepare their artwork before class.</blockquote><p>Barina students love to draw with Inkscape. Initially, we only introduce students to Inkscape as a way to draw shapes and add fonts, but the Barina students caught on quick. They were the first school to sketch drawings at home on paper first, then transfer their drawings to the computer when they're in TechLit class.</p>

<p>Barina was the first school in Nakuru county with TechLit classes. Kids in Barina love to sketch and digitize their art.</p>
